Getting the size right
Most armchairs are 70–90cm wide. Leave 30cm of clear space on each side so it reads as a deliberate placement rather than something wedged in. If it sits beside a sofa, keep the seat heights within about 5cm of each other — mismatched heights are the thing that makes a room look assembled rather than designed.

For a reading corner, allow room for a floor lamp behind and to the side. For a swivel chair, leave clearance all round — the whole point is being able to turn.

Fabric and finish
Bouclé hides marks well and adds texture to a plain room — which is why white bouclé chairs work in practice, not just in photos. Velvet reads richer and suits a chair that is more display than daily use. Leather and tightly woven fabrics wipe clean. Exposed wood frames — oak, walnut, sled bases — keep a large chair from looking heavy.
