The TV unit is the one piece of living room furniture people buy by eye and regret by measurement. Get the width right and everything else follows.

TV unit, TV stand or TV cabinet?
The three words get used interchangeably, and they are not the same thing. A TV stand is open and freestanding, with minimal storage — lighter to look at, easier to move. A TV cabinet has doors or drawers that hide cables, consoles and receivers — better if the room needs to look tidy without effort. TV unit is the general term for both, and the one most people in the UAE use. This collection covers all three.

How wide should it be?
The unit should be wider than the screen — ideally by 15–20cm on each side. And measure your screen's actual width, not its diagonal inches; a 65-inch TV is about 145cm wide, not 165cm, and that mismatch is where most sizing mistakes come from.

• 50-inch (about 111cm wide) — look at 140cm and up
• 55-inch (about 123cm) — look at 160cm and up
• 65-inch (about 145cm) — look at 180cm and up
• 75-inch (about 167cm) — look at 200cm and up
• 85-inch (about 189cm) — look at 230cm and up

A unit narrower than the screen looks unstable even when it isn't.

Height matters for your neck
Sitting on a normal sofa, your eyes land around 100–110cm from the floor, and the centre of the screen should be near that. Most sofas and most TVs work out to a unit height of 40–50cm — which is why low-profile designs suit modern living rooms better than tall cabinets. Mounting the screen high above a unit is what causes neck strain, not a low unit.

Extending units for uncertain rooms
Several of ours extend — 200cm out to 300cm — which is worth considering if you are not sure of your final layout, or if you expect to upgrade the television later. Screens keep getting bigger; furniture usually does not.

Materials
Solid wood and walnut suit warm rooms and hide daily marks. Sintered stone and marble tops make a statement and wipe clean. Glass keeps a small room feeling open but shows dust. Two-tone units bridge the difference.
