The dining table anchors the whole room — it's where you eat, work, help with homework and host friends. Getting the size and shape right matters more than getting the style right, and it's the mistake most people make when buying online.

Getting the size right
Allow about 60cm of table edge per person, and leave around 90cm of clear space on every side so chairs pull out comfortably. That puts a 2-seater at roughly 80–100cm, a 4-seater around 120cm (or Ø120cm round), a 6-seater at 160–180cm, and an 8-seater from about 200cm. Measure your room first — a beautiful table that blocks a walkway becomes a daily annoyance.

Round, oval or rectangular?
A round dining table suits smaller apartments and open-plan kitchens: no sharp corners, a smaller footprint, and conversation flows better because everyone faces each other. A rectangular dining table is more efficient in long rooms and works better if the table doubles as a desk. An oval gives you the length of a rectangle with the softer feel of a round.

Wood, marble, travertine or stone?
Solid oak, walnut, beech and ash suit warm, natural interiors and hide daily wear well. Marble, travertine and sintered stone tops make a statement in modern rooms — use coasters and wipe spills quickly. Micro-concrete sits somewhere in between: understated, hard-wearing, and easy to match with existing furniture.
