The Shade Is Doing Two Jobs
Most shades diffuse light. This one shapes it: the pattern blocks light in some places and lets it through in others, so switching it on puts texture on the wall as well as light in the room.
That is worth knowing before you buy, because it changes where it belongs. Against a plain wall the effect is the whole point. Against wallpaper, a gallery wall or a curtain, the pattern lands on something already busy and disappears.
Black, and What It Costs
A dark shade absorbs light rather than glowing, so the output is directed rather than spread. You get a defined pool below and a pattern behind — not a lit corner.

Getting the Height Right
On a console or side table, aim for a total height of about 75–85cm from the floor. Beside a bed, the bottom of the shade wants to be near eye level when you sit up.
Leave clear wall behind it — the pattern needs somewhere to land.
