A Black Shade Changes Everything
Almost every lamp has a pale shade, which glows and spreads light sideways. A black one blocks it, so the entire output goes down onto the surface below in a tight, defined circle.
That makes it dramatic rather than soft. It carves a bright pool out of a dark room instead of lifting the whole corner — which is exactly right on a sideboard or console where you want the light to be an effect, and wrong as the only lamp in a living room.
