Why a High Back Changes the Chair
A low-backed accent chair is comfortable for twenty minutes. A high back supports your shoulders and head, which is the difference between a chair people perch on and one they settle into for an evening.
It also does more for a room. A tall chair adds a vertical line where a sofa and coffee table are all horizontal — useful in a corner, beside a window, or opposite the sofa where the eye needs somewhere to land.
Where to Put It
Most armchairs are 70–90cm wide. Leave about 30cm of clear space on each side so it reads as a deliberate placement rather than something wedged in. If it sits beside the sofa, keep the seat heights within about 5cm of each other — mismatched heights are what makes a room look assembled rather than designed.
Three Tones
Graphite hides daily marks best and anchors a pale room. Off White keeps a small space open but shows more. Sand sits between the two and is the most forgiving with wood furniture.
