345cm, and Who Needs It

This is villa scale, or a large open-plan living room. It seats a family along its length and folds out into a genuine sleeping surface rather than an emergency one.

In an apartment it will not work, and that is not a judgement on the apartment. 345cm of sofa needs a wall it can have entirely to itself, plus 90 to 120cm of clear floor in front for the bed to open into. If you are furnishing a one or two-bedroom flat, our 240cm three-seater is the sensible piece at less than half the price.

Storage in the Base

Bedding and pillows store inside the frame. On a piece this size that is not a small convenience — a folded-out 345cm sofa bed needs a lot of linen, and it has to live somewhere.

Thirty-Three Combinations

Fabric first. Bouclé hides marks and adds texture. Velvet gives the deepest colour and shows the most. Mélange is flecked rather than flat and forgives the most.

Then colour: White, Sand, Taupe, Sage Gray and Black as neutrals; Terracotta, Mocha and Dusty Rose to warm a room; Mint and Navy to cool it; Olive between the two.

On 345cm of furniture a strong colour is the single largest decision in the room. If in doubt, take a neutral and put the colour in cushions and a rug, where changing your mind costs far less.

Measure the wall, the walking route, the doorway and the lift. A sofa of this size arrives in sections, but the largest single section still has to get in.
