Measure Your Counter First

This is the step that decides whether a bar chair works, and almost nobody does it.

Leave 25–30cm between the seat and the underside of the counter. Less and your knees hit; more and you are perched too low to reach comfortably.

• Kitchen counter (90cm) — needs a seat around 60–65cm
• Island or bar (105–110cm) — needs a seat around 75–80cm

Measure from the floor to the underside of your counter, not to the top of it. Overhangs and thick worktops change the answer.

Velvet on a Bar Chair

Velvet gives the deepest colour of any upholstery and makes a bar chair look considered rather than functional. Be clear about the trade-off: a kitchen island is where food and drink get put down, and velvet shows marks more than a tight weave.

If the chairs will take daily family breakfasts, our terylene bar chair wipes down and holds its colour far better.

Three Colours

Sand keeps a kitchen light and warm. Ash is the mid-tone that hides the most while staying neutral. Graphite anchors a pale kitchen and is the most forgiving of daily marks.

Spacing Them

Allow about 60cm of counter width per chair. Two chairs need roughly 120cm of clear island edge — crowd them and nobody can turn to talk.
