Choosing Your Colour
Black and Ivory are the safe anchors — they work with any table and any wall colour. Taupe sits between the two and hides marks best. Olive, Ocher and Amber are the ones worth being brave about: against a pale wall and a wooden table, a set of olive velvet chairs does more for a room than any amount of decor.
A practical note on velvet: it feels soft and looks rich, but it shows crumbs and water spots more than bouclé or linen. In the darker colours this is barely noticeable; in Ivory it will need more frequent brushing down.
