The Arc, and What It Is For
A straight floor lamp lights the space beside itself. An arc carries the shade out over a chair or sofa, so the light lands on the person sitting there.
In an apartment that is genuinely useful: the base tucks against a wall or behind the sofa while the light reaches the middle of the room. It gives you overhead light without touching the ceiling, which is the only route available in a rental.
Why Pleats Change the Light
A plain drum shade throws an even wash. A pleated one has thick and thin sections, so the light varies subtly across the shade and the edges of the pool are softer.
The difference is small in a photograph and clear in a dark room — a pleated shade reads as warm, a plain one as bright.
Where It Belongs
Over a reading chair, behind a sofa, or arcing into a corner where a table lamp has nowhere to stand.
Leave clearance on the side the arch reaches, and check the height against any shelf, bulkhead or wall-mounted television nearby.
