Most people buy a sofa bed once, and most people get one thing wrong: they measure the room for the sofa and never check whether the bed can actually open. This guide covers the decisions that matter, in the order they matter, for apartments in Dubai and across the UAE.

1. How much space do you need in front of a sofa bed?

Most designs need 90 to 120cm of clear floor in front of the sofa for the bed to open into. That is the short answer, and it is the number almost nobody checks.

A sofa bed has two footprints. Folded is the length, depth and height as it sits against the wall — the number on the product page. Open is that plus the forward clearance.

Measure the clearance with your coffee table where it actually sits, not where you imagine moving it to on the night. If the only way the bed opens is by dragging furniture into the hallway, the sofa bed will quietly stop being used within a month.

2. Pull-out vs fold-out: the mechanism matters more than the fabric

This is the part nobody researches and everybody regrets.

• Pull-out — the bed slides forward from beneath the seat. The seat cushions stay in place, and it can usually be operated one-handed. The easiest type to live with.
• Fold-out — the backrest or seat folds down flat. Generally cheaper, generally needs two hands, and the cushions have to go somewhere.
• Click-clack — the back drops to seat level in one movement. Compact and cheap, but the sleeping surface is the seat, so comfort depends entirely on the cushions.
• One-button — a single release opens the whole frame. Worth paying for if a guest will be putting it away themselves in the morning.

If you are choosing between pull-out and fold-out on price alone, apply this test: can one person open and close it without instructions? If not, it will be opened for the first guest and never again.

3. Foam or pocket springs

Most sofa beds fold a thin foam pad over a metal frame. Anyone who has slept on one knows how that goes — you feel the bar.

Pocket springs are individually housed coils that move independently, the same construction as a proper mattress. They cost more, and they are the single upgrade worth paying for if anyone will sleep on it for more than a night or two.

Honest rule of thumb: if guests stay one night at a time, twice a year, foam is fine. If family visit for a week, or the sofa bed is the second bedroom, buy pocket springs.

One bedroom — two or three-seater, 180 to 240cm. The living room can take a full sofa; check the gap to the coffee table.

Two bedroom — three-seater or compact corner. Often the second bedroom is an office, and a sofa bed turns it back into a guest room when needed.

Villa or open-plan — corner or U-shaped sectional. Seats more, sleeps wider, and there is room for it to open without moving anything.

5. Straight, corner or U-shaped

A straight two or three-seater is easier to place, easier to open, and it can move to any wall in any flat you live in afterwards. That last point matters more than people expect if you rent.

A corner sectional seats more people along the same wall length, because the return catches space a corner would otherwise waste. It also sleeps wider. The cost is flexibility: it has one place it can go, and it rarely follows you to the next apartment.

A U-shaped sectional needs a dedicated area and clearance on the open side. It is a villa or large open-plan piece.

If guests stay once or twice a year, the straight one is almost always the smarter buy.

6. Fabric — choose for the sitting, not the sleeping

A sofa bed gets sat on every day and slept on occasionally. Pick for the sitting.

• Terylene — tightly woven, wipes down, holds colour under strong light. The practical choice for a room with afternoon sun, which is most UAE apartments.
• Bouclé — looped texture that hides small marks well and feels warm to lean against. The best all-round compromise.
• Chenille — short dense pile, soft and slightly lustrous. Shows pressure marks where people sit; they brush out, but you will see them.
• Velvet — deepest colour and richest look, and it shows the most. Beautiful, and higher maintenance on a piece that doubles as a bed.
• Mélange — a flecked weave rather than a flat colour, which makes it the most forgiving where nothing quite matches.

7. Where will the bedding live?

The question every sofa bed owner runs into in month two. Sheets, a duvet and a spare pillow have to go somewhere, and the wardrobe is usually already full.
